Columbia Gas of Virginia, a NiSource Company
Fauquier County Natural Gas Reliability Project

To meet the growing needs of homes, businesses and other natural gas customers in Fauquier County, VA, Columbia Gas of Virginia proposed to relocate and upgrade an existing point of delivery (POD), a point at which natural gas from a larger natural gas transmission pipeline goes into the local gas distribution system. The community was opposed to the structure for fear of unprecedented growth including the rise of data centers. A communications and public affairs strategy was developed to address the concerns of the citizens and to sway the County Board of Supervisors to approve the permit required to begin construction on the structure.

As the communications strategist for the public affairs effort, I developed fact sheets, talking points, FAQs and statements on the need for the new POD. I emphasized the need to replace aging infrastructure to ensure the safe delivery of natural gas to a community that had grown significantly since the original POD was installed.

On December 8, 2022, the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors approved the Columbia Gas application to replace the existing, 52-year-old Rock Spring POD. Construction of the new POD began in mid-January 2024. An informational website was developed to keep residents informed of the progress of the construction project.
